Editorial: Over and out (no debt relief from The Netherlands)

POSTED: 02/5/13 12:21 PM

By now there ought to be no one left in St. Maarten ready to believe that the Netherlands will re-open its wallet to hand some more debt relief to St. Maarten.

It is over and out. We have had our chances – from November 2006 until the deadline on October 10, 2010 – and we blew it.

We have reported extensively about who is to blame for all this, but it would probably be an injustice to point to former Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto alone. There have been others at the helm before him who did not manage to bring the bacon home either – or to at least prepare everything for this homecoming.

It is no use crying over spilt milk and it is no use wasting any more time on finger-pointing either. St. Maarten has made its bed and now it has to sleep in it. Now it’s time to show how tough we really are.
