The visit of the Collectivité d’Outre Mer de Saint Martin to the parliament in Philipsburg might have come across as a lame event, but it is significant all the same.

The visit of our French neighbors exuded an atmosphere of willingness to (finally) start working together. In the past there has been a lot of talk but very little to no action in this field.

When Daniel Gibbs for instance floated the idea in September 2011 to create a united Saint Martin parliament consisting of elected members of the Dutch-side parliament and the French-side Territorial Council, not a single Dutch-side politician reacted to it. By now, that idea has long been forgotten.

That is a shame, because it is still a viable and useful concept that decision makers on both sides of the border – if they are really serious about working together – could pick up again tomorrow if they wanted to.

Time will tell whether yesterday’s meeting was once more an exercise in pointless lip service or that this time around politicians actually are going to do something.
