The Dutch electorate has spoken, and seldom before was its voice so clear: pro Europe and against the Islamophobic rhetoric of Geert Wilders and his Freedom Party.

The liberal VVD and the Socialist Labor Party both made a strong appeal to voters and they recorded historic victories that have astonished political observers.

While not all votes had been counted at the moment of this writing, and while there is still a remote possibility for Labor to leapfrog the VVD based on the link of its list to those of the Socialist Party and GreenLeft there seems to be a clear perspective for a government with a more humane face.

Will this benefit the three autonomous countries in the Caribbean? That is, for the moment, an open question without a clear answer. For St. Maarten the most pregnant question is whether a new finance minister will be prepared to reopen the books and give the country the part of the debt relief it missed out on.
