The gun epidemic on St. Maarten showed its ugly face again. This time the news is even more disturbing than last time. A 13 year old boy – 13! – was found carrying a 9 millimeter semi-automatic pistol. Although police said it carried only blank shells, it could still be used for nefarious purposes, like threatening people or even robbing them if the victims thought the gun carried real bullets.
There needs to be robust and open talks with all stakeholders about the abundance of illegal fire arms on the streets of this island, especially when they are being found on teenagers and children.
Where are these guns coming from? Who is profiting from their sale? How are they getting into the island in the first place? And how is it possible for a little boy to get his hands on something like that?
The first step in resolving a problem is admitting you have one in the first place.
