When Kingdom Relations Minister Liesbeth Spies travels to the Caribbean this week it will be for more than just a meet and greet tour. The minister has already indicated that she considers the integrity of the government in Curacao a real concern, so that promises some fireworks in Willemstad.

On Monday the minister will be in St. Maarten for meetings with the governor, the prime minister and the Council of Ministers. We imagine that these meetings will primarily deal with the progress – or lack thereof – with the different plans of approach.
What ought to be a real concern for the minister is the lack of capacity and expertise to conduct financial criminal investigations. There is a lot to be done in this field, but so far these investigations do not get the attention they require. The explanation is always the same: no capacity, no expertise.
It is time for the big Kingdom partner to acknowledge this situation and to offer a helping hand.
