The Pride Foundation is crying foul about the Great Salt Pond and for good reason. Plans to build a cricket stadium and a drag racing strip require a further filling-in of the pond. That this has even been considered as a realistic proposition is remarkable.
Back in 2010, when the sand for the ring road was dumped in the pond questions came up about the diminished retention capacity that was already under pressure due to the influx of soil from surrounding hills.
Promises to measure how much of the pond has actually been given up for the ring road so far have not been fulfilled to our knowledge, let alone that excess sand has been removed. It seems about time to do that exercise now instead of taking rash decisions about further filling.
