How quickly the attention has faded from the disaster with the Malaysia Airlines plane that was shot down in the Ukraine. The fallout of this human tragedy now continues on the political stage.

The European Union and the United States have imposed sanctions against Russia that target banking and the oil and defense industry. Putin has hit back with sanctions of his own – a ban on imports from the countries that support the sanctions against Russia.

It is a power game that will cause economic damage to exporting countries but if this situation lasts long enough it will also create a lot of misery for Russian citizens. They will be without fruit, vegetables, meat and other essentials – all products Russia does not produce.

Around 80 trucks from the Netherlands carrying export products have already been halted at the closed Russian border. The Netherlands is the ninth most important exporter to the country.

Family and friends of the victims of the airplane disaster are still struggling with the loss of their loved ones – a process that will continue far into the future.

It is time for all parties to come to their senses, show they have a heart and focus on the issues that really matter.
