Editorial: Emancipation Day

Tomorrow the parliament will deal with the legislation to make July 1 – Emancipation Day – a national holiday. As we have pointed out on more than one occasion, doing so could be meaningful. Slavery was awful, it should never have happened, but it did.
It is also happening to this very day – in different forms and with different slave drivers and different victims.
There is no doubt that the parliament will approve the legislation. When that is done, we’ll have to see how the Ministry of Culture will turn Emancipation Day into a meaningful event, instead of just another day off.
