That the parliament does not want to run head over heels into passing legislation for the establishment of the Integrity Chamber is up to a point understandable. Hence the adjournment of yesterday’s meeting.
The question is however what parliamentarians do with their time. The media had the draft law already in their possession on February 1, so it is rather odd that MPs – almost ten weeks later – still need more time to handle this rather pressing matter.
However, it is what it is and if the parliament does not get the ball rolling it will be responsible for all consequences.
Justice Minister Dennis Richardson would rather travel to the Netherlands with the approved law in his back pocket on April 19 – it would make the country’s position in talks with the kingdom much stronger. That is something the parliament ought to keep in mind.
