The building permit for the new Parliament building is finally signed, but according to the President of Parliament, drs. Gracita Arrindell it is already time to start thinking about a new location.

If the Parliament intends to find new digs when the contract for the Caribbean Palm building expires seven years from now, parliamentarians should indeed hurry up. One only has to consider the history of the new government administration building to realize that the road from idea to reality is at times very long.

The main question is of course whether the Parliament needs a new location seven years from now. After all, the number of parliamentarians will most likely not increase, and even if this were the case, the current setup offers plenty of maneuvering space.

Residents have hardly recovered from the hefty price-tag that comes with the current accommodation for Parliament, but it seems that they better prepare for the next round – and that one will without any doubt even be more expensive.

We understand that our Parliament needs a decent place to handle the people’s business – and we think that they have it already. There is nothing wrong with dreaming big, as long as our MPs don’t start dreaming about the wrong things.
