Editorial: Debt relief

St. Maarten has found a bargaining chip after the Dutch Finance State Secretary Weekers asked the country to exempt citizens and companies from the BES-islands who buy goods here from the turnover tax.
Finance Minister Roland Tuitt wants to use this as the crow bar to break open the discussion about debt relief once more with the new Dutch government that takes office next week.
We have obviously no idea how the new Minister of Kingdom relations Ronald Plasterk will look at this issue. What we do know is that his predecessor Liesbeth Spies has said on more than one occasion that the book on debt relief is closed and that it will never be opened again.
In St. Maarten’s favor is without any doubt that the country is doing much better than Curacao – where chaos seems to be the standard – and that things are moving in the right direction.
So who knows, with a little help from our friends, the impossible could still become a reality.
