Editorial: Cooperation between Gendarmerie and St. Maarten Police

The cooperation displayed between the Gendarmerie and the Korps Politie St. Maarten is welcome news; a good sign for the island and a bad one for those looking to exploit the open border nature of the island for illicit purposes. It is one of the weak points of having an open border and separate legal jurisdictions on such a small land mass.

We hope to see more of this in the future. But it should not stop there. Greater cooperation in all areas of important issues facing the island as a whole is sorely needed. Ideas have been floated around about an informal supra-national parliament, or at least a committee set up between the governments of both sides, seem to have gone nowhere. And that’s a shame.

While the island may be divided formally divided along political and legal lines, its economy, society, and culture are inseparable. What affects one side will inescapably and inevitably affect the other.

In an age of rapid and complex globalization and movement of capital and people, St. Maarten/ St. Martin need more, not less, cooperation.
