No there was no blood in the courtroom yesterday, but the Ombudsman took the opportunity to describe in graphic detail the cruelty that accompanies cockfights. The state brought a counter-argument: eating meat is also cruel to animals. We could not find fault with that one, but we had to think about an old wisdom: if the boy next door jumps out of a third-floor window, are you going to jump as well?

The morality of cockfights will always divide people in two camps (at least): those who consider it a tradition (that ought to continue) and those that love animals (and want it to stop).

These are however now the questions for the Constitutional Court to consider. It has to weigh the pros and cons and decide somehow whether allowing cockfights violates an article in the constitution. For the animal lovers the answer is obvious. On September 13 we’ll know whether the Constitutional Court agrees with them.

We’d like to keep it simple: do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you.
