The French-side revolts against the Collectivité’s ideas about urban planning bring to mind that St. Maarten has zoning plan-issues of its own.
On August 22, 2012 – indeed, more than 37 months ago – Vromi-Minister William Marlin presented a zoning plan initiative. The country was divided in thirteen zones and the plans would be ready in June 2013.
We all know what happened: nothing, at least by far not enough.
Yet, Marlin made at the time some remarks that would sound like music in the ears of our French neighbors. He noted that overdevelopment will destroy the country’s natural resources and that “for some strange reason” St. Maarten had not embraced its environment.”
It seems that the French-side authorities are on the verge of making the same mistake. Fortunately, there are plenty of citizens up in arms against plans that may destroy Saint Martin as we know it today. Chapeau.
