Editorial: Business as usual (St. Maarten Parliament meeting)

POSTED: 12/9/14 11:33 AM

The Parliament sent an invitation for a meeting at 2 p.m. yesterday afternoon. The email reached us at 10.18 a.m. The idea was to discuss three reports of the Progress Committee.

At 1.35 p.m. we received another email, saying that the meeting had been postponed.

No further explanation – nothing.

We find this a weird way of doing business – though at the same time, we realize that it is business as usual at the Parliament.

If there is a meeting at all, it seldom – if ever – begins on time and when it finally begins, there is no end to the dog fights about procedures. Anything, it seems, as long as it is not about content.

We have a Parliament, but many people may rightfully wonder how it is taking care of the people’s business.

Sure enough, there was plenty of interest last week when it came to flying to Panama for meetings of the Latin-American Parliament Parlatino.

Some things never change.
