Editorial: Bad idea. (France wants to cancel the treaty of Concordia)

The French threat to the Netherlands to do something about the inequality between the Dutch and the French side of the island – or else – is probably going to come to nothing, but still. The idea to cancel the Treaty of Concordia, followed by the establishment of real borders with controls and visa requirements has taken hold in the minds of French politicians.

What will happen next is uncertain. We do not think that either side of the island will benefit from the real borders the French have in mind. French-side residents and businesses will become the prime victims of such a measure.

The idea of closed borders is counterproductive. Even weirder is that it comes from a continent that has opened its borders to facilitate the free flow of people, goods and capital – a decision that has boosted the European economy and offered citizens many more opportunities.

René Dosière contemplates taking all this away from the residents of our island, only because, in his opinion, the French side is unable to keep up with its Dutch brethren.

Bad idea.
