Editorial: A brutal insult (to autistic children and Down syndrome sufferers)

POSTED: 09/6/13 5:03 PM

That there are children in our community that needs more attention in school than others is a fact. Under the law on compulsory education it is the government’s responsibility to take care of these children and to give them the best possible care.

For MP Dr. Lloyd Richardson this is apparently too much to handle, given his suggestion that families with children that suffer from autism and Down syndrome “to move to a developed country.”

That way, St. Maarten won’t have to spend money on these special needs. Richardson claimed that St. Maarten needs to generate income “to deal with our own problems.”

This is in our honest opinion a brutal insult to families whose children are depending on special needs education. And guess what: these special-needs children are an integral part of what Dr. Richardson labels as “our own problems.”

In a real community, people stick together and they do not show the door to those who need some extra support, so we sincerely wish that Dr. Richardson stands alone with his opinion.

Richardson himself has to go to another country to have a treatment. That will take many years because insanity is not a disease you can treat overnight.

Richardson is wrong on so many levels. His views speak to his colonialist mindset, his lack of compassion and ambition.
