Early morning fire destroys barber shop

St. Maarten – Nothing was saved in the D-Guebo barber shop after an early morning fire swept through one of the lower sections of the Cat’s Complex at #88 Illidge Road shortly after 3.00 a.m. yesterday morning.

The families that were affected the most lived above the barber shop. One young man related how he was forced to drop an infant into the waiting arms of a friend from the balcony before jumping down himself. Under the dire circumstances, that was the safest way out because the smoke was so thick, it was impossible to use the staircase.

The fire fighters did their best to contain the blaze from the windows but because of the barber shop was so secure behind steel barriers, it took them a little longer to gain forced entry by which time everything was burnt beyond recognition.

Obviously shaken by the incident that threatened to destroy her business establishment, the proprietor of Cat’s, Wendy Thewet said that it was the first time that a fire occurred there. From the expression on her face, it was obvious that it was a severe blow to her business.

While it was too early to ascertain the cause of the fire, because of the excessive smoke, the officers in charge examined the apartments before allowing the occupants to return. The probable cause of the fire remains unclear.
