Parade 5St. Maarten – In connection with the upcoming International Day Against Drug and Illicit Trafficking, the Turning Point Foundation and its prevention team organized a drug awareness parade yesterday to highlight the fight against substance abuse in the community. Along with the Red Cross Foundation, fourteen groups, clubs, and drum bands were involved in the parade, including the Boy Blue Scouts, Marigot Boys and Girls Scouts, Boys Brigades, Pioneers Pathfinders, Dynamites Pathfinders, Bethel Pathfinders, Rangers Pathfinders, St. Peters Pathfinders, New Generations, Voice of Our Children, Ephesus Pathfinders, Turning Point Extreme Team Prevention, and the Leo Club. Many youth marched through the streets to the vibrant beat of drums and carrying colorful anti-drug banners and expressive placards.

The parade began at the Marie Laurence School in Middle Region, winding its way down to where some of the groups joined the Turning Point’s Extreme Prevention Team at the Fresh Market in Madame’s Estate. Others joined in at different intersections on the island.  They then made their way in unison toward the Clem Labega Square where government officials joined in and spoke of the fight against drug and alcohol abuse to the general public. Among them were Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams, Minister of Justice Dennis Richardson, and Minister of Health Dr. Cornelius de Weever. The Ephesus Seven Day Adventist church also held a skit presented to raise awareness of the effects of substance abuse on family life.

Turning Point Foundation’s Extreme Prevention Team will also team up with the Pioneer and Boy Blue Scouts drum bands again on June 30 to host an all day basketball and activity filled event at the L B Scot Auditorium starting at 12 pm and concluding at 9 p.m. The event will feature 3-pt shootouts by the Minis All Stars, Cadets, and Juniors All stars as well as an awards ceremony. The Turning Point Foundation “invites the wider community to join in and take a stance with us.”
