Drug and gun possession keeps young woman jailed

St. Maarten – The Common Court of Justice confirmed the sentence against Daniella Hughes yesterday. The Court in First Instance sentenced the 26-year-old in March to 21 months – with 7 months suspended – for the possession of 2 kilos of marijuana, a firearm and live ammunition. She was acquitted of membership of a criminal organization.

Solicitor-General Taco Stein demanded 3 years of imprisonment against Hughes, because he found proof that the defendant had also dealt in soft drugs. The Appeals Court however, ruled that there is insufficient supporting evidence for a conviction on this point.
