St. Maartten – On a recent visit to St Maarten, Deanna Brown, the daughter of the late great James Brown had the opportunity to listen to some sweet steel pan music from Dow’s Musical Foundation when they were performing at the Divi Little Bay & Resort.

After having a lengthy conversation with Isidore’ The Mighty Dow’ York, she realized that they both had something in common and according to York, one thing led to another. Brown, the President of the James Brown Family Children Foundation whose objective is to carry on the musical legacy of her father was quick to pave the way for a collaboration in the form of an invitation.

“At first, she wanted to bring a group here, but I told her we can also go there and we can make it a cultural exchange,” York said. So when the annual festivities take place, a group of 25 will be making their presence felt in Augusta Partnership Children’s Week Festival from October 2nd to the 7th.

“This is the very first time that a steel pan group from St Maarten will be participating in that festival and we are looking forward to it,” York added. However, the children whose ages range from 5 to 16 will not be entirely on their own. A few adults included the Mighty Dow will also be on the trip.

The young but very enthusiastic group of steel plan players also played a proactive roll to make the trip possible through several fund raising activities, selling of CD’s in addition to some meaningful donations from the business community.

Thanks to the Management of T Shirt Max, the entire delegation will be attired in some specially designed shirts that will be worn on the trip. Deepak Dharma, the manager at T Shirt Max said that he was happy to be associated with the Dow’s Musical Foundation and lauded the efforts of the foundation whose objective is to pass on the art form.
