Donner to raise investigation during Caribbean tour

THE HAGUE – Well placed sources around Dutch Minister of Kingdom Relations Piet Hein Donner has said he’ll raise the matter of installing an independent committee to investigate the operation of the Central Bank of Curacao and St. Maarten and the Government of Curacao when he visits the Dutch Caribbean. Donner begins a working visit to the Dutch Caribbean this weekend. The visit starts here in St. Maarten and sources say he wants to discuss the committee’s composition and its task with the partners he’ll meet.

The committee was agreed to in a June 1 meeting of the Kingdom Council of Ministers at the request of Curacao’s Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte. He later withdrew his country’s participation stating that an independent committee has no legal ability to investigate the functioning of the Central Bank. The law dictates that the government can only intervene at the Central Bank through the Supervisory Board of Directors, the General Audit Chamber and the Common Court of Justice. Donner replied that he understands the laws, but that he still wants an independent investigation so there’ll be no misgivings about the report’s contents.
