Devon OttoSt. Maarten – Convicted armed robber and murderer Devon Otto was stabbed several times in a violent altercation in the Pointe Blanche prison on Saturday morning, shortly before the Dutch prime minister’s visit. According to reports, Otto was on a recreational break when he was approached and stabbed by two other inmates. He sustained numerous wounds during the fracas. He was rushed to hospital and treated. He remains there in the meantime in stable condition.

The two inmates have been arrested and are cooperating with police. The motives for the stabbing are still not yet clear. The prosecutor’s office is still investigating the incident.

Otto, who is originally from St. Kitts, is currently serving the maximum temporary sentence of 30 years for the March 31, 2008, murder of census office employee Stanley Gumbs, an attempt on the life of Louis A. Richardson, aka Sticky, on March 21, 2008, and robbing three American tourists on March 26 of that same year.

He was given an additional 9 years for shooting two other inmates while he was detained in Curacao last year. He was acting as an assassin on behalf of a drugs gang who ordered the hit on one of their rivals. How he received a gun in prison, a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber handgun, remains unresolved.

After the Curacao shooting, Prosecutor Manon Ridderbeks said that the new sentence will fit within the maximum of 30 years temporary imprisonment in case Otto gets a conditional release after serving two thirds of his first conviction. But in case Otto does not get conditional early release, the prosecutor’s office will demand that the new sentence be executed consecutively, meaning that Otto could spend another 6 to 9 years after completing his 30 years behind bars.

Former Minister of Justice Roland Duncan had requested for the dangerous prisoner to be sent off island to a maximum security prison in the Netherlands, but this has not happened because the case for last year’s prison shooting at the Sentro di Detenshon i Korekshon in Curacao is still pending and remains a barrier to his transfer.
