Detention of robbery suspects extended: Second suspect identifiedPOSTED: 08/14/15 9:53 AM
St. Maarten – The second suspect in last Wednesdays’ robbery of jewelry store Oro Diamante on Front Street has been identified as 20-year-Jamal L. During this robbery, 23-year-old rapper Kilo Gotti shot and killed police Officer Gamali Benjamin, who will be laid to rest today.
Yesterday afternoon, the Judge of Instruction went to the police station in Philipsburg for a hearing to decide about the detention of the suspects. The hearing took place at the station because of security concerns.
“From the four suspects that were arrested on Monday night, we released one on Tuesday,” said Public Prosecutor Karola van Nie to this newspaper yesterday evening. “The Judge of Instruction extended today the pretrial detention of the other three suspects with another 8 days. Among them is J.L., 20 years old and born on St. Maarten. He is the second suspect who fled the scene during the robbery.”
The 23-year-old suspect R.D also known as rapper Kilo Gotti who is still in the Medical Center will be seen by the Judge of Instruction on Friday morning, who will then decide about extending his pre-trail detention. The second suspect’s first name is Jamal and he is a resident of the Sucker Garden district.
On Monday evening, police conducted a search at a home in St. Peters where four people were arrested. One of them is Jamal L. The other three are charged with hiding the suspect.
The investigation continues. Kilo Gotti is around the clock under police guard. Jamal L. is not cooperating with investigators according to a source close to the investigation. Police have also conducted searches at the homes of relatives of the two suspects.
