Demand 5 years against rape-suspect

St. Maarten – Sheldon Ferando H. claimed it was all the fault of a 12-year-old girl whom he claimed he thought to be seventeen, but the victim of his sexual desires had told investigators a different story. When she went to the defendant’s home to borrow some matches, he had grabbed her, dragged her into the house and raped her.

Prosecutor Dounia Benammar demanded a 5-year prison sentence and based the proof for the charges on DNA-evidence.

Attorney Shaira Bommel asked the court to acquit her client, saying that the Dutch forensic institute NFI ought to do more research into the DNA-samples. Right now, they only prove that they stem from a man. Further research is necessary to establish whether this is H.’s DNA, the attorney said.

The court will pronounce its verdict on February 20.
