Demand 12 months on appeal for gun possession

St. Maarten – Solicitor-General Taco Stein demanded 12 months imprisonment on appeal against Norvin Adelbert W. for firearm possession. Of the demand, 6 months are conditional.

The defendant was stopped by a police patrol on August 1 of last year, seemingly for no obvious reason. Police officers searched the car and found a firearm and live ammunition.

The defendant denied in court last year that the officers had asked permission to search the car, let alone that he had given it.

After hearing the officers, the court concluded that no permission had been given. Therefore the gun and the ammunition were excluded from evidence and the defendant was acquitted. The prosecutor’s office appealed the verdict. The Common Court of Justice will pronounce its verdict on May 2.
