St. Maarten – A drug dealer escaped police during a high speed chase on Friday evening, though patrol officers managed to confiscate the dealer’s car, three bricks of compressed marijuana and a large amount of cash.

The Special Task Force was on a routine patrol on Friday evening when officers spotted around 10.30 p.m. a car driving dangerously and at a very high speed on Welfare Road. The driver was on the phone.

The patrol ordered the driver to stop, but instead he sped off towards Orange Grove Road, where the driver slowed down and jumped from the car and fled into the darkness.

Officers fired a warning shot but the suspect got away. The car rolled forward, since the driver had left it in drive, and came to a full stop near Carl’s and Sons bakery.

Officers found three bricks of compressed marijuana sealed in plastic bags and a large amount of cash in the car’s center console. The car, the cash and the drugs were confiscated for further investigation.
