St. Maarten – Two civil servants within the Inspectorate of Public Health, Social Services and Labour have upgraded their level of certification to function more effectively. Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labour Cornelius de Weever congratulated Selby Philips and Andrew Budike for having successfully completed an occupational health and environmental safety program offered by the University of the West Indies (UWI). Minister de Weever said that his ministry collaborated with UWI to equip its staff to “increase labour inspections on the island.”
The program offered by UWI had a direct concentration on industrial hygiene.
“They have completed with commendable diligence and proficiency the training program that was offered in Industrial Hygiene, the use and application of industrial hygiene toolkits, identification and evaluation, measurement and control of occupational health hazards,” de Weever said of Philips and Budike.
In October of last year, Budike also began a long distance postgraduate program on occupational safety and health. In January he travelled to Italy to complete the practical and in-classroom sessions of his studies which ended on March 23, 2012. Both Budike and Philips were lauded for their accomplishments and have been described as hardworking, exemplary and seasoned team players within the civil service.
