St. Maarten —On the heels of two failed armed robberies over the weekend, another armed robbery attempt was foiled yesterday morning. “At approximately 9:45 am several police patrols were sent to Union Caribe money transfer located on Welfare road in Cole Bay to investigate an ongoing armed robbery,” police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson stated in a police report.

“The report came in immediately after an employee of the establishment activated the panic alarm. According to the information received two masked men, one with a baseball bat and the other with a gun stormed into the establishment with the intention of committing a robbery.  A shot was fired inside the building during the attempted robbery. The suspects did not succeed in robbing the establishment.” The thieves did however manage to rob a customer inside of the establishment of personal belongings. “After committing this act the robbers fled in a small white vehicle driven by a third suspect in the direction of the Kruythoff round about. No one was injured during this incident and this case is under investigation by the Special Robbery Unit,” Inspector Henson stated.

He noted that plans are being finalized for increase police controls and additional vehicle checks at “hot spots” as part of efforts to deter crime.
