Daring armed robbery on Front StreetPOSTED: 05/26/14 3:15 PM
St. Maarten – A brazen daylight armed robbery took place at Swiss Time, which specializes in high end time pieces, on Front Street this past Saturday morning, the police reported. Details of the robbery remain sketchy, as detectives are still piecing together the facts, sources said. Several police patrols were immediately dispatched to the area at approximately 11:50 am
On the scene the investigating officers learnt that two unknown men – though it could be up to four – both wearing motorcycle helmets and dressed in dark clothing had arrived in a white van with license plate 5638 AAA on Front Street and parked it in the middle of the road in front of the store. Both suspects jumped out of the van blocking the flow of traffic in Philipsburg and entered the establishment.
One suspect was said to be armed with a gun and the other with a crow bar. The suspect with the gun threatened the workers while the other suspect destroyed several showcases and took out the contents.
Afterwards, the suspects left the establishment, leaving the van to block the street and hamper efforts to reach the store, and fled the scene on two motorcycles that were apparently parked in a nearby alley. The van has since been confiscated and the Special Unit Robbery is investigating.
It should be noted that one cruise ship, the Carnival Valor, was in port at the time.
