St. Maarten News – The Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports granted a talent scholarship of $20.000 per year for a period of no more than 5 years, to local cricket hero Keacy Carty, who has been recognized by ministerial decision as a gifted and talented athlete. Carty receives the scholarship for his accomplishments at the 2016 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh, where he was named Man of the Match in the finals where the West Indies team beat India.
“The special talent scholarship awarded to Mr. Carty deviates from the regular application process and procedure for study financing. This scholarship is intended to enable Mr. Carty to pursue high education at a regional or international institute as a student athlete,” the ministry clarified on a press statement. “Notwithstanding his amazing talent, it is important to have a strong educational background to fall back on. The awarding of this talent scholarship is issued in compliance with article 13 paragraph 4, article 15 paragraph 1 of the Island Ordinance Study Financing and Article 5 paragraph 1 of the National Subsidy Ordinance and must remain within the scope.”
Many may not understand the impact and true significance of Keacy’s performance, but because of the role he played to secure that win, the name St. Maarten is resonating worldwide, the ministry stated. “The official issuance of the scholarship will only take place if Keacy accepts the scholarship and submits an official proof of enrollment from an accredited regional or international educational institution.”
