GREAT BAY – St. Maarten welcomed its one millionth cruise passenger on Tuesday. This is the earliest that the country has welcomed the individual in the 11 consecutive years the feat has happened. According to a release 994, 280 cruise passengers had arrived by the end of May, setting the stage for the one millionth passenger to arrive between June 1 and June 5. The one millionth passenger did not arrive until late July in 2011.
“The continued early attainment of the million passenger mark is a testimony of St. Maarten’s prominence in the cruise industry and its allure to cruisers,” Mingo said.
A minimum of 57,150 cruise passengers are expected to visit in June. There could be more if a trend that started in May continues. The country welcomed 76,476 cruise passengers last month. That’s 20.1 per cent more than 63,651 cruisers that were originally projected to visit. The harbour group of companies expects that 1, 550, 264 will visit in 2012.
