Council of Ministers dissolves parliament

POSTED: 06/5/13 12:10 PM

St. Maarten – The Council of Ministers went through a hectic meeting yesterday morning, whereby Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams again refused to put a proposal to dissolve the parliament on the agenda. In the afternoon an extraordinary meeting was held. Wescot-

Williams was not present and the meeting was chaired by Vice- Prime Minister William Marlin. In this meeting the Council decided to dissolve the parliament and to call for elections.

This newspaper reached Minister Marlin briefly for a comment, but he said he was in a meeting and would call back later. The Council is expected to inform Governor Eugène Holiday today about its decision.

Given the fact that the Governor has already appointed Prime Minister Wescot-Williams as informateur and charged her with the formation of a new government, it is unclear what will happen with the Council of Ministers’ decision and whether it will have any effect on the formation process.
