Cornelius de Weever takes office as minister today

POSTED: 03/10/11 12:14 PM

St. Maarten – Dr. Cornelius de Weever will be taking the oath of office as Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor today. The national resolution confirming his appointment was signed by Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams on Wednesday morning.

De Weever’s confirmation to the post comes 77 days after his predecessor Maria Buncamper-Molanus announced in Parliament resigned from the post at the height of a scandal over the sale of the economic ownership rights to a piece of long lease property for US $3 Million.

De Weever, who is a civil servant who is currently serving in the Inspectorate of Public Health, will be the fourth “professional minister” in the Cabinet as he did not run on the list of any political party in the September 17 election. The other three are Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto, Justice Minister Roland Duncan and Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications Franklin Meyers.
