Conditional sentence for attack on prison guard

St. Maarten – Jefferson Ingemar La Pas was back in court once more yesterday. After his involvement in a robbery at Ricky’s pawnshop in 2007 for which he served 22 months and an undisclosed other crime that earned him a 5-year prison sentence, La Pas took out his frustration on a prison guard on April 15, hitting the man with a broom stick on his arm.

La Pas, 32, admitted his action to the court yesterday. “I was frustrated that day,” he said. The defendant is almost at the end of his stay in Pointe Blanche and said that he intends to return to The Hague in the Netherlands upon his release.

Prosecutor Gonda van der Wulp noted that La Pas had attacked the guard without any direct reason. She demanded a 2-month prison sentence for the ill-treatment.

Attorney Shaira Bommel asked the court to consider that her client had immediately been punished by the prison management with 14 days solitary confinement, a punishment he had not objected to. “I should not have done this, is what he told me,” the attorney said.

Another fact that added to the defendant’s frustration was that his mother, who worked at the prison as a guard, had died a couple of months earlier.

Judge Koos van de Ven was lenient and gave La Pas a 2-month suspended prison sentence with 2 years of probation.
