SIMPSON BAY – The St. Maarten Yacht Club reports that the competition for its 11th annual Marlow One-Design Regatta is already getting fierce. Although the contest is slated for June 16 and June 17, many local and regional teams appear in top form and are currently competing for bragging rights.

“This year, Hans Van der Gulik from Curacao and Mowgli Fox from St. Barth’s have registered to challenge our top-notch local teams,” the St.Maarten Yacht Club stated in a press release. Last year’s winning team, skippered by St. Maarten’s own Jolyon Ferron, will be back again to defend its title, alongside with Frits Bus and Robbie Ferron.

The event is sponsored by Marlow Rope U.K., which has been manufacturing high-quality yacht rope for over 200 years. The regatta will take place in the Simpson Bay Lagoon.

Lagoon Sailboat Rental N.V will provide its fleet of Jeanneau 20 one-design sailboats. A number of short Windward-Leeward races will also be featured over that June weekend. The boats will be rotated between races to ensure a level playing field. “The races are fast, the competition is stiff, and the action is extremely fun to watch,” the St.Maarten Yacht Club said.

The skippers’ briefing will be held at the Yacht Club on Friday June 15 at 6:00 p.m. Racing begins at nine o’clock on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. On the second day, lunch at the St. Maarten Yacht Club will be followed by the prize giving ceremony.
