St. Maarten – The Court in First Instance sentenced Marius Alberto Mathew to 204 days of imprisonment and 80 hours of community service. Of the sentence, 180 days are suspended. The remaining 24 days Mathew already spent in pre-trial custody. Mathew was charged with snatching a cell phone from a girl’s hand on November 26, 2010.

The defendant appeared in court twenty minutes after the scheduled hearing and by that time the court had already sentenced the 19-year-old who was not represented by an attorney. When he showed up, Judge Tamara Tijhuis gave him a quick rundown of the case and the sentence.
