St. Maarten – Mardon Mario Amede took out his frustration against his employer – the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Hotel – on October 17 of last year by stealing an iPad with charger, a necklace, and a watch from a guest-room. Yesterday he expressed his regrets in the Court in First Instance: “I know it was wrong to do, but I was working and I was not getting paid correctly for my overtime,” the 23-year-old told the court yesterday.

Amede obviously lost his job after the theft was discovered. He now works as a chef at a restaurant in Saba.

Prosecutor Mr. Dounia Benammar was quickly done with the case. The defendant confessed and he also said that he is prepared to do community service on Saba. The prosecutor demanded 50 days imprisonment, with 40 days suspended, 2 years of probation and 80 hours of community service. Amide spent ten days in preventive custody already.

Attorney Brenda Brooks had no issue with the demand. “My client is willing to deal with the consequences of what he did.”

She also agreed with the prosecutor’s assessment of the theft: “If tourists are targeted, our own people are targeted too.”

Judge Tamara Tijhuis followed the prosecutor’s demand.
