St. Maarten – Miami Garden Police Chief Matthew Boyd and Head of the Miami Dade School of Justice Dr. Hector Garcia are in St. Maarten to mentor the five community officers. The mentorship period, which began on June 11, is part of the overall training. It will last until July 15 and includes the officers working on several community projects under Boyd’s guidance.

Boyd has been involved in community policing for over twenty years. The force he currently leads has been able to help reduce crime by more than 50 percent.

Once the officers have completed the mentorship part of their program they will fly to Miami for their internship at the Miami Dade School of Justice. Commissioner Carl John, who is spearheading the project, will visit them.
