St. Maarten – Seventeen staffers in the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard were trained in coaching recently. The course, which included the commandant, officers, the head of the station here in Maarten and officers from Curacao and Aruba, wrapped up the presentation of certificates on October 19.
This is the third group that’s been trained in coaching. The trainers – Els van Oostrum and Kurt Schoop – used an interactive style of training where participants get classes twice over three days. The course components include being conscious of your role in communication, coaching with enthusiasm, asking questions instead of advising too soon, listening to the needs of others, giving advice with inspiration and resolving conflicts in an effective way. The participants learned seven specific skills, examined a coaching structure and discussed inter –collegial consultation and dealing with feedback.
