Civil servants off on December 31

St. Maarten – All government offices will be closed on December 31; New Year’s Eve which will fall on a Monday. Prime Minister with responsibility for General Affairs, Sarah Wescot-Williams made this announcement yesterday that civil servants will be allowed to have the day off. Two weeks prior, she indicated that December 24, Christmas Eve day will also see the closure of government departments.

However both days are not public holidays, banks and other private sector institutions will remain open. In the meantime, schools have already closed for holiday break and many students are preparing to participate in the many activities held during this season.

The prime minister urged that people remember the real reason for the season and find ways of showing appreciation for others which goes beyond purchasing gifts that may have a financial but temporary value.

She also cautioned that shoppers pay attention to the comparison list of goods that has been published by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the media.

“The list should be helpful in terms of deciding where to shop especially during the busy Christmas season,” she stated.
