Civil Registry ready to return license administration to Justice Ministry

St. Maarten – Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams has said the civil registry is perfectly willing to allow the Ministry of Justice to take over or have back the administration when it comes to the issuance of drivers licenses. In fact the proposal for this to happen, which was first tabled by the civil registry, “has been a topic of communication between the two ministries.”
“When it was initially proposed by the civil registry actually that the transfer be done, clearly the ministry of justice indicated that it is not something that could have happened from one day to a next because the preparation to do the issuance of drivers license at the ministry of justice would have taken some time,” Wescot-Williams said at Wednesday’s Council of Minister’s press briefing.

Later she’d add, “The civil registry has indicated that the task of issuance of drivers license only adds to the work that department already has, hence their proposal to have the matter of the issuance of drivers licenses put back with the ministry of justice.”
Wescot-Williams also announced Wednesday that the civil registry had initially planned to begin issuing licenses again on February 15 since the new national decree on driver’s licenses has been published.
