Circulation plan for Cole Bay traffic in place this morning

POSTED: 08/26/11 12:36 PM

St. Maarten – The closure of Welfare Road paralyzed traffic to and from the airport on Wednesday and yesterday, but the Vromi-ministry has in the meantime designed a solution that looks on the map like a huge roundabout and that will remain in place until the work on Welfare Road is completed by mid-December. The circulation plan became effective this morning.
Head of New Works ir. Kurt Ruan presented the plan yesterday morning while Windward Roads workers were in the process of setting up the appropriate traffic signs.
Motorists coming down the Harold Jack Hill from the direction of Philipsburg will have to turn right onto Union Road at the Kruythoff roundabout. Traffic towards Marigot will remain in the right hand lane; traffic heading for Simpson Bay will turn left onto Orange Grove Road near the Harley Davidson store.
The Orange Grove Road will become a two-lane one-way road. Traffic coming from the direction of Marigot will have to turn right onto Orange Grove Road and follow Wellington road until the connection with Welfare road for a right hand turn towards the Kruythoff roundabout.
Wrigley Street between Welfare Road and Wellington Road will remain closed for all traffic.
Traffic coming from the direction of the airport will be able to use the open lane of Welfare Road towards either Philipsburg or Marigot.
The G. Alexis Arnell Road, commonly known as the Cakehouse Road will remain open as a one-way road for traffic from Philipsburg towards Cole Bay and Marigot.
