Christian Lloyd’s killer escapes from prison

POSTED: 10/31/11 12:34 PM

St. Maarten – Management of the Pointe Blanche Prison and Justice Minister Roland Duncan both announced Sunday that Anthony Ray Spencer, who was sentenced to 20 year imprisonment for on October 12, had escaped from the Pointe Blanche prison. Spencer, a 41-year-old Jamaican, was sentenced for murdering Christian Lloyd – a charge that he denies.

According to the statement from the prison Spencer was released from his cell and led to the kitchen at 5:30 a.m. to assist with preparing breakfast. He saw an opportunity to climb through a hole in the roof. Once outside he ran across the roof, jumped onto the roof of the prison command central and then climbed over the fence and ran away. Spencer was spotted on the roof by officers in watch post two, who raised the alarm, but he was able to get away before the officers could get outside. Police are investigating the escape and trying to track Spencer down.

Spencer is the second person to escape the prison this year. The first was Chucky Omar Nelson, who escaped on March 20 from the Gijzelaar section by sawing through the bars of his cell. He evaded capture until August 29 after 162 days on the run.

Duncan, who was speaking on Sunday’s For the Record with Eddie Williams on Radio Soualiga 99.9 Choice F.M., said the fact that Spencer escaped through the roof is further proof that the prison needs to be repaired and renovated as soon as possible. He’s hoping that the bids for the work can be approved next week so the 8 million guilder revamp can begin. While he understands that residents of Simpson Bay are not in favor of having prisoners housed in the extension of the Simpson Bay Police Station, Duncan intends to go forward with the plan. Even if a winning bid is selected next week, Duncan will have to wait for some things to be done to complete the new facility.
“We are working to make Simpson Bay safer. I have rejected container cells because it’s waste of money and in the next two years we won’t need containers. It’s a very delicate tight rope. I know Simpson Bay is not happy, but we have very little choice,” Duncan said.
