Changes to St. Maarten’s government salary system coming

St. Maarten – The government wants a discussion with the unions representing teachers and civil servants on periodic adjustments to salaries. The current system of indexing salaries every year is considered untenable. Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams, who is responsible for personnel, has pointed out that continuing with annually indexing salaries will make personnel costs “the major part of the budget.”

“That is not the intention of government. What government clearly wants to do is look at the necessary budget amendment, make the general decree adjusting the salaries of civil servants, coming to an agreement to pay out what we agreed to pay out and immediately following that or simultaneously with that we have discussions with the union about how we go about indexation going forward,” Wescot-Williams said.
