St. Maarten – The Board of financial supervision (Cft) has gone into waiting mode for the government of St. Maarten to deliberate on and submit new adaptations to the 2011 budget. Parties spent the week talking about solutions and are still hoping to deliver a joint proposal to Minister of Kingdom Relations Piet Hein Donner by April 14 that he will then present in the Kingdom Council of Ministers on April 15.

Discussions were held at the technical level on Tuesday and Wednesday and then discussions were held with the Council of Ministers on Thursday. The Cft has now put a new proposal to the government and expect a reaction after the Council of Ministers meets on the budget at the regular meeting of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.

“We had talks in a good atmosphere and with good cooperation,” Cft Secretary Geert Beergsma said when asked about the talks.

He’s also revealed that the Cft still does not agree that the reserves are the only option left to generate income to fill a gap in the budget.

“We still believe that there are other solutions to be found than using the reserves per se,” Beergsma said on Friday.
