CANTO inviting applications for annual essay competition

St. Maarten – The Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO) has launched its 2011 essay writing competition and is inviting teenagers on St. Maarten to submit entries and win some “super prizes.” The competition is in celebration of “World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD)” on Tuesday, May 17, 2011. The deadline for submission for essays is May 2nd, 2011.To mark the day, CANTO will be hosting its 5th Annual World Telecommunication Information Society Day – Essay Competition.

Talented winners can take home cash prizes as well as net book computers, smart phones and an all-expenses paid trip for two to this year’s CANTO conference in Suriname for the top prize winner. All students aged between 15 and 17 years of age, and who are resident in CANTOs regional member countries are eligible to take part. This includes St. Maarten, which has been a CANTO member for many years.

This year’s contest will be based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) theme of: “Better life in rural communities with ICTs”. CANTO competition organizers are circulating flyers with rules and other information about the contest throughout the region in anticipation of a record number of entries this year. Advertisements will also appear in regional newspapers giving a further boost to the contest.
