Bush fire escalates and destroy hotel’s storeroomPOSTED: 03/4/15 12:33 PM
St. Maarten —What began as a bush fire in the Bush Road area quickly escalated and engulfed a wooden shed in the area in flames and eventually burned it to cinders yesterday just before noon, spouting clouds of dark smoke into the oncoming traffic.
Fire officer Silvenico Pauletta explained that the fire department had been contacted at approximately 11:45am with reports of a bush fire in the vicinity of the Ernest Hotel and responded immediately with two trucks sent to the scene. On arrival the fire officers noticed that the wooden shed at the back of the hotel was engulfed in flames and despite their best efforts they were unable to salvage the shed. Pauletta said that by approximately noon the shed had been completely destroyed by the fire. The officers were however able to control and eventually put out the fire before any more structural damage could occur. Nobody was hurt during the fire.
The wooden shed is said to belong to the Ernest Hotel and was used as a store room. The cause of the fire is not known at this time but speculation by persons on the scene is that it may have been caused by maintenance work being done in the immediate vicinity. The fire department is continuing their investigations.
