Burglar gets suspended sentence

St. Maarten – Florentin Jerome did not appear in the Court in First Instance yesterday to face charges for two crimes he committed back in 2010. That did not prevent the court from sentencing him to an 8-month conditional prison sentence with 2 years of probation.

The now 21-year-old defendant burglarized a home on August 25 2010; on October 17 he attempted to steal a car and he also stole goods from the vehicle.

Prosecutor Mr. Gonda van der Wulp considered the charges proven. Though she took into account that Jerome has a prior conviction (10 months imprisonment of which 3 months were suspended), she did not want to send him back to prison. For the two charges he spent already 58 days in custody.
