Brothers remain detained for abusing younger sisters

St. Maarten – Two young men remain detained for abusing their two younger sisters. The Judge of Instruction released their mother, who was also arrested in connection with the abuse charges, under protest from the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Public Prosecutor Bart den Hartigh said the woman and two young men were arrested late last week – either Wednesday or Thursday – after someone close the family reported that the two young girls were being sexually abused. When they were led before the Judge of Instruction the prosecutor’s office requested that the detention of all three be extended but request pertaining to the mother was turned down.

“The judge did not believe there was sufficient suspicion for the mother to continue to be detained, but we have a different opinion about that. There appears to be gross negligence here, as the mother seemingly knows about the abuse and still left these younger children in the care of the elder brothers,” den Hartigh said.
